Seafish – who we are and what we do
Who we are:
Seafish is a non-departmental public body established in 1981 to support the UK seafood industry from ‘sea to plate’.
What we do:
We have a large number of in-house
specialists who can provide expert information across a range of topics
on the UK seafood industry including:
• Market trends and retail data for the seafood industry;
• Seafood industry statistics;
• Research into consumer attitudes e.g. ethical purchasing, eating out;
• Environmental issues;
• Economic analysis of the UK seafood industry and UK fleet;
• Legislation affecting the seafood industry;
• Fishing gear technology and responsible fishing practices;
• Seafood technology and best practice for seafood processors;
• Research and development for the whole seafood industry; and
• Safety at sea.
Further sources of information
Through our industry connections, we can point you to further sources of information, for example, scientific institutes; Government bodies; relevant industry bodies; regional bodies; and individual specialists. Seafish can also put you in contact with people working in our industry all over the UK including fishermen, fish farmers, chefs, fishmongers and processors.
Accreditation, quality and promotional activities
We
also run a series of accreditation and quality schemes and promotional
activities to recognise excellence and best practice across the UK
seafood industry. These include:
• Responsible Fishing Scheme;
• Quality Awards for processors and fish and chip shops;
• The Seafood Awards (biennial, next in 2009); and
• Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition.
